When is the best time to cut hedges?
Hedges are very useful as well as decorative in your garden, but, to stay healthy and look their best, they need to be pruned properly at the best time.
So when is the best time to do this job that many home and business owners dread having to do each year?
How old is your hedge?
The first part of the answer depends on whether the hedge is under two years old. If so, it will need ‘formative pruning’ for the first two years after planting. The best time is in Winter or early Spring.
For hedges planted more than two years before, maintenance trimming is usually best done once a year for informal hedges and twice a year for formal hedges. Some formal hedges might require three cuts a year to look their best.
In some cases, maintenance trimming can be done between Spring and Summer. If you do it during this time, please take into account the potential for disturbance to any nesting birds and delay it until after the nesting season (March to August) if you see any signs of nesting. Apart from affecting our feathered friends, it’s an offence under the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981 to damage or destroy the nest of any wild bird while it’s in use or being built.
What kind of hedge is it?
The next question to ask is what type of hedge is it – evergreen or deciduous?
Deciduous hedges (which shed their leaves each year) need ‘formative pruning’ in their first two years in the Winter, just after planting, and for the first two years. They should have a ‘maintenance pruning’ every Summer.
Evergreen hedges (which keep their foliage year-round) need formative pruning in the Spring after planting and for the first two years. Maintenance pruning should be carried out thereafter each Summer.
Species trimming times
The trimming guideline times for individual species varies depending on whether they are formal hedges, conifers, informal or flowering hedges.
If you’re unsure of its variety, give us a call to arrange a visit and we’ll let you know the best times and techniques for trimming it. Generally speaking, most of our hedge trimming work in Perth & Kinross is done in September.
